What Is a Funding Cost Calculator?

A funding cost calculator projects the cumulative cost of funding rate payments on a perpetual futures position over a specified holding period. Funding rates are periodic payments between longs and shorts that keep the perpetual contract price aligned with the spot price. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts; when negative, shorts pay longs. For positions held across multiple funding intervals, these costs compound and can materially impact profitability. This calculator helps you estimate total funding cost before entering a trade, determine the breakeven price movement needed to cover funding expenses, and evaluate whether a swing trade is economically viable at current funding rates. Blackperp tracks funding rates across Binance, OKX, and Bybit for all 21 monitored assets, updating every 6 minutes.

Formula & Methodology

Funding Per Interval = Position Size × Funding Rate Intervals = Holding Period (hours) / Payment Interval (hours) Total Funding Cost = Funding Per Interval × Intervals Annualized Rate = Funding Rate × (24 / Payment Interval) × 365 × 100% Breakeven Move = Total Funding Cost / Position Size × 100% Daily Cost = Funding Per Interval × (24 / Payment Interval)

Examples

Normal Funding — BTC Day Trade

Position: $50,000 | Rate: 0.01% | Interval: 8h | Holding: 24h
Total Cost: $15.00 | Annualized: 13.7% | Breakeven Move: 0.03%

High Funding — ETH Swing Trade

Position: $20,000 | Rate: 0.05% | Interval: 8h | Holding: 168h (1 week)
Total Cost: $210.00 | Annualized: 68.4% | Breakeven Move: 1.05%

Negative Funding — Short Earns

Position: $10,000 short | Rate: −0.03% | Interval: 8h | Holding: 72h
Total Earned: +$27.00 | Annualized: −41.1% | Funding works in your favor

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Funding rates above 0.03% per 8h (annualized ~41%) are historically unsustainable and often signal a mean-reversion opportunity.
  • Check funding across multiple exchanges — rate divergence between Binance, OKX, and Bybit creates basis trade opportunities.
  • For swing trades, project funding cost for the entire expected holding period and subtract from your profit target.
  • Negative funding while long is a double win: you get paid to hold your directional position. These regimes are relatively rare and worth exploiting.
  • Funding rates can spike 5-10x during extreme moves. Always reassess if rates change dramatically while you are in a position.
  • Blackperp's funding signal fires when rates reach extreme percentiles — historically, these extremes precede reversals.

About Polkadot (DOT) Trading

Polkadot (DOT) perpetual futures reflect interoperability sector positioning. DOT funding tracks parachain auction cycles and cross-chain bridge developments. DOT exhibits moderate ETH correlation (0.75-0.85) with episodic divergence during parachain events. Position sizing should account for 3-6% daily ranges. DOT's institutional following provides more stable order book depth. Blackperp monitors parachain ecosystem health and cross-chain messaging activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do funding rates cost on average?

The baseline funding rate on Binance is 0.01% per 8 hours (approximately 13.7% annualized). During trending markets, rates can reach 0.1%+ per interval (137%+ annualized). In neutral or bearish markets, rates often go negative. The long-term average tends to be slightly positive, reflecting perpetual demand for long exposure.

When are funding payments collected?

Binance collects funding at 00:00, 08:00, and 16:00 UTC. OKX and Bybit have similar 8-hour schedules. Some exchanges like dYdX charge hourly. You only pay or receive funding if you hold a position at the exact settlement time. Closing 1 second before avoids the payment.

Can I earn money from funding rates?

Yes. When funding is positive and you are short, you receive funding from longs. Basis traders systematically go long spot and short perps to collect positive funding while being market-neutral. This "cash and carry" trade can yield 10-30% APY during sustained positive funding periods.

How do I compare funding rates across exchanges?

Convert all rates to a common interval (8-hourly or annualized) and compare. Blackperp's funding page shows cross-exchange rates for all 21 assets. Significant divergence (e.g., 0.05% on Binance vs 0.02% on Bybit) can indicate liquidity imbalances or arbitrage opportunities.
